Milton Portz retired in 1948 as secretary of the corporate committees in chemical and metallurgy
work at Republic Steel Corp in Cleveland. He was co-author of a book "Open Hearth Practices,"
which Republic Steel used in its training program.
After being graduated from Wittenberg College and doing graduate work at Columbia University, he
became superintendent of schools in Hartville and Strasburg.
In 1915 he became chief chemist for Central Steel Alloy of Massillon, later being promoted to
manager of the methods and standards department. When Central merged with Republic, he was
named chief industrial engineer of the Central Alloy District of Republic's Canton-Massillon
plants.He transferred to Republic's main office in Cleveland in 1936.
Milton married Helen Greer, daughter of William Harkness Greer, Jr and Adaline Ross. Of this
marriage one son was born, Arthur G. Portz.
